Central to South Philadelphia Planning Study (CSP)

Defining needs and limits for I-95 reconstruction from Center City to South Philadelphia

I-95 Section CSP – COMPLETED

PennDOT recently completed a long-term, multi-phase planning study to consider the condition of and need to rebuild and improve the I-95 corridor in southeastern Pennsylvania.  The planning study is summarized in the I-95 CSP Master Plan linked below.

The I-95 CSP Planning Study outlines the purpose and need for highway reconstruction along “Sector B,” a 5.5-mile stretch of the Interstate from Spring Garden Street in Central Philadelphia to the Girard Point Bridge in South Philadelphia.

Key considerations include managing traffic congestion, improving highway operations, and supporting connections between I-95 and City streets and neighborhoods. The plan also looks at the environment, including natural, historic, and cultural resources, with an eye towards reconstruction in an urban landscape.

Next Steps

The Master Plan identifies four separate sections of I-95 in Philadelphia that will be refined through further studies, which are now moving forward. PennDOT will continue meeting with project stakeholders and communities and asking for input. The timing and costs of reconstruction will depend on many variables, which will require further planning to resolve.
