November 6, 2023 – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced today that the existing Chestnut Street Park over Interstate 95 was closed permanently on Monday, November 6, in preparation for the temporary relocation of the Irish and Scottish memorials and the demolition of the existing CAP structure over Interstate 95. PennDOT’s contractor will install a fence around the park to secure the location.
Chestnut Street and the loop through Penn’s Landing to Market Street will remain open to vehicles and pedestrians during the memorial relocation until early next year when the road will close for demolition of the CAP.
Once the memorials are relocated, work crews will clear, remove, and salvage materials from the park prior to the CAP demolition.
The work is part of PennDOT’s $329 million I-95/CAP project to replace, expand, and improve the existing covered section of I-95 and improve multi-modal connections between Center City and the Delaware River waterfront.
