October 23, 2023 – Construction has been substantially completed on PennDOT’s $31.2 million I-95/AF2 project following the reconstruction of Allegheny Avenue between Interstate 95 and Delaware Avenue in Port Richmond in early fall (see below).
Since starting work on Section AF2 in 2022, PennDOT’s contractor has rebuilt and improved Castor Avenue between Richmond Street and Delaware Avenue and Delaware Avenue between Castor and Allegheny before moving to the final stages of work earlier this year on Allegheny Avenue east of I-95.
In addition, a number of new traffic signals were installed, stormwater drainage was improved, and new sidewalks were built in several areas within the project area.
Improving these surface streets in Port Richmond will improve traffic movement to and from the I-95/Allegheny Avenue Interchange and reduce commercial traffic in adjacent neighborhoods. The interchange will be improved under subsequent projects to rebuild I-95 at the interchange.
James J. Anderson Construction, of Philadelphia, is the general contractor on Section AF1.
Section AF3 will reconstruct I-95 and its structures from Tioga Street to Wheatsheaf Lane, including the northbound ramps at Castor Avenue. Section AF3 is in the Final Design stage and tentatively scheduled for construction in 2025. Section AF4 will reconstruct I-95 from Clearfield Street to Tioga Street, including the southbound ramps at Allegheny Avenue, and is tentatively scheduled for construction in 2028.
