Allen Street Closed for Ramp Detour Preparation

Jun 18, 2019

King of Prussia, PA — Allen Street, which parallels northbound Interstate 95 between Richmond Street, near Cambria Street, and Allegheny Avenue in Port Richmond, will close on Friday, July 5, to allow crews to prepare the street for use as the detour route during the upcoming two-year closing of the southbound I-95 ramp to Girard Avenue, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Allen Street will reopen as one-way southbound in late July prior to the off-ramp closing. The Girard Avenue off-ramp is tentatively scheduled to close in early August.

Allen Street has been used as a one-way northbound street since it was built by PennDOT in 2015 for use as the detour route when the ramp from Richmond Street to I-95 north was closed for two years of construction.

When the southbound off-ramp to Girard Avenue closes in July, traffic normally using that ramp will be directed to exit southbound I-95 at Allegheny Avenue, turn left on Allegheny Avenue, turn right immediately on Allen Street, then left on Richmond Street to either Girard Avenue or Aramingo Avenue.

When Allen Street closes, crews will install new directional signs on it and at its intersections with Allegheny Avenue and Richmond Street.

The Girard Avenue off-ramp work is part of the $312 million project currently underway through 2023 to replace the southbound I-95 viaduct between Palmer Street in Fishtown and Ann Street in Port Richmond, reconstruct and improve the southbound on and off-ramps at Girard Avenue, and rebuild the southbound I-95 pavement between Ann Street and Allegheny Avenue.
