Viaduct Demolition Underway at Girard Interchange

Aug 29, 2015
Fall 2015 - PennDOT's contractor on the Interstate 95 Girard Avenue Interchange improvement project is taking down the northbound side of the I-95 viaduct between Palmer and Ann streets.

Crews will work at night on the top side to saw cut the concrete. Saw cutting will be followed by daytime operations to remove the concrete, dismantle the beams and cross members and demolish the support piers.

Demolition started between Lehigh Avenue and Ann Street, then moved to the area between Cumberland and Palmer streets.  The section from Cumberland Street to Lehigh Avenue will be the last segment taken down.

The viaduct will be replaced with a wider, realigned structure that will be supported by the dozens of piers already in place between the interstate and Richmond Street.
