Improvements Finished at State and Princeton
Crews have completed work to widen Princeton Avenue at the intersection with State Road and are continuing construction on the Princeton Avenue northbound on-ramp in the remaining major work activities underway on the I-95/CP1 contract, the first of two contracts to rebuild and improve the Cottman Avenue Interchange and adjoining segments of I-95.
Princeton Avenue has been widened at the intersection to include two through lanes – for traffic accessing the ramp to I-95 North – as well as separate left and right turn lanes to State Road north and south. (Left photo)
State Road has been widened slightly to include one northbound and two southbound lanes along with new storm water drainage and new sidewalks and curbs. New sidewalks are in place along this improved section of State Road.
The five-block stretch of Princeton Avenue east of Torresdale Avenue, which was rebuilt to include traffic-calming curb extensions (bump-outs), new sidewalks, curb ramps and bicycle lanes, has been converted to two-way traffic.
Reconstruction continues on the existing northbound on-ramp at Princeton Avenue, which is being widened to accommodate a spur ramp that will provide access to I-95 north from Milnor Street. Construction of the spur ramp will be ongoing through the first half of 2012.
A related retaining wall -- shown in the photo to the right -- has been built to support the northbound embankment of the interstate where the improved on-ramp will merge with I-95.
A new on-ramp from State Road to I-95 South was built at Longshore Avenue. That ramp was opened to traffic in August.
Work to improve Cottman Avenue between State Road and Torresdale Avenue has been completed. This stretch of Cottman Avenue, where a new eastbound lane is now in place along with two westbound lanes, is now carrying traffic in two directions. Motorists using the new eastbound lane, which has been added to provide access to a new southbound on-ramp from Cottman Avenue east of State Road that will be build under the second stage of the I-95 Cottman Avenue Interchange Improvement project beginning in 2012, must turn right onto State Road until the new ramp is in place.
All the work is being done under the $31.9 million CP1 project, the first of two stages of construction at the I-95/Cottman Avenue Interchange in Northeast Philadelphia. Stage 2 (CP2) is scheduled to go to bid early next year and be under construction by mid-2012.
