Completed Improvements

9/6/2011 CP1 Status: September 2011

NEW SOUTHBOUND ON-RAMP OPEN, OLD RAMP COMING DOWN

The new southbound on-ramp from State Road at Longshore Avenue is open to traffic and work continues to remove the old Princeton Avenue on-ramp to I-95 South.

Crews removed the old ramp structure over State Road and are continuing operations to remove the ramp’s remnants on either side of State Road and finish improvements to the Princeton Avenue/State Road intersection. Princeton Avenue is being widened at the intersection to include two through lanes – for traffic accessing the ramp to I-95 North – as well as separate left and right turn lanes to State Road.

The five-block stretch of Princeton Avenue east of Torresdale Avenue, which was rebuilt to include traffic-calming curb extensions (bump-outs), new sidewalks, curb ramps and bicycle lanes, will be converted to two-ways at the completion of work at the State Road intersection this fall.

Reconstruction also continues on the existing northbound on-ramp at Princeton Avenue, which is being widened to accommodate a spur ramp that will provide access to I-95 north from Milnor Street. (The ramp is scheduled to be closed and detoured from Friday night until Saturday afternoon, Sept. 9-10, for installation of drainage pipe.)

Improvements to State Road between Cottman Avenue and New State Road – which is being widened slightly to include one northbound and two southbound lanes along with new storm water drainage and new sidewalks and curbs – are nearing completion.

Work also has wrapped up on Cottman Avenue between State Road and Torresdale Avenue, where a new eastbound lane is now in place along with two westbound lanes. Motorists using the new eastbound lane, which has been added to provide access to a new southbound on-ramp from Cottman Avenue east of State Road that will be build under the second stage of the I-95 Cottman Avenue Interchange Improvement project beginning in 2012, must turn right onto State Road until the new ramp is in place.

All the work is being done under the $31.9 million CP1 project, the first of two stages of construction at the I-95/Cottman Avenue Interchange in Northeast Philadelphia. Stage 2 (CP2) is scheduled to go to bid later this year and be under construction next spring.
